Cutting with Straight Wire
Two trolleys with a hot wire travel on linear bearings to the X and Y axis coordinates, according to a drawing that has been generated e.g. in Corel Draw. The third dimension is the thickness of the material being cut. This is the basic contour cutting method and is available with all STYRODESIGN machines.

Cutting with Lathe and Straight Wire
STYRODESIGN foam cutters can be equipped with a lathe tool, that allows cutting of columns, banisters etc.
The EPS material is mounted on a lathe and fixed by small spikes (needles). Use Corel Draw or any software which can save or export drawings in HPGL or DXF, to create the outline of your shape : this will be the cutting path for the hot wire. Now set the number of turns in the Foam Shaper software (ranging from 1 up to 2000), which will determine the number of sides of your shape. If the number of sides (turns) is big enough, you can achieve a perfectly smooth surface. While cutting the lathe can also perform a rotational movement - this results in a spiral effect.

Cutting with Lathe and Shape Wire Tool
With your STYRODESIGN foam cutter you can use an adapter for the shape wire tool, replacing the hot wire for cutting. Just insert a shaped (bended) wire, preferably 1-2mm thick Kanthal type, and the rotational movement of the lathe plus the movements on X and Y axis will create the most amazing shapes.

Cutting with Turn Table and Shapeable Wire Tool
if you choose the optional Turn Table there are even more possiblities to cut shapes from EPS, including sphaeroid shapes (balls) : The Turn Table is computerized and works together with the Hot Wire, thus creating 3D shapes.

Serial Cuts
The STYRODESIGN Foam Shaper software, which is bundled with all our foamcutters, allows for automatic serial cutting of irregular shapes. The drawings (side views) can be created in Corel Draw. You may use pictures form a digital camera (converted to HPGL files) for drawing preparation. This method (although time-consuming) gives perfect opportunities of creating almost any 3D object.
